When and where video did games became obsessed with combos, exactly? Likely it was far before anything we could guess on some extremely obscure Intellivision game that only a handful of hardcore elitists remember. Regardless, there’s no denying that combos have found their way into every genre, whether it’s role-playing games (Final Fantasy XIII) or especially fighting games (pretty much all of them) and side-scrolling beat-em-ups (Castle Crashers). Super Comboman is a member of the latter, and as the name implies, it takes the combo aspect to a whole new level.
Players will take control of Struggles, a Pacific islander with a “three piece mullet.†Struggles will run around various destructible 2D environments beating the crap out of everyone who stands in his way. And he can increase his combo-tastic arsenal by clicking stickers. Yes, stickers.
I was given an early look at Super Comboman while developer Interabang was part of the IGN Indie Open House, and the game looks like a quirky little brawler with colorful visuals. I’m intrigued to see how the deep, combo-reliant gameplay turns out on a touchscreen, but I believe in the power of the three piece mullet.Super Comboman is being developed for PC and iOS with no announced release date.
